So to begin with, we're going to talk about where racism 00:09:55.360 --> 00:10:00.240 as a concept came into American and Western culture. 00:10:00.800 --> 00:10:00.880 So 00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:05.200 if we want to look back to where this particular term, this 00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:10.560 concept, this supposed sin, entered into Western culture. 00:10:10.560 --> 00:10:13.520 We don't have to look back as far as you may think, 00:10:13.520 --> 00:10:16.880 because it only dates to the middle of the nineteenth century, and 00:10:16.880 --> 00:10:20.720 not in English, English comes along much later for this. 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:22.080 In the latter half of 00:10:23.440 --> 00:10:30.080 the nineteenth century, in French, there were some writers who were themselves 00:10:30.080 --> 00:10:34.560 nationalists, we would call them today most likely, who used this particular 00:10:35.280 --> 00:10:38.560 term to describe what they were advocating. 00:10:38.560 --> 00:10:42.640 And so they used this term in a positive sense to describe 00:10:42.640 --> 00:10:45.440 advocacy for their own people. 00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:51.040 And so this was used by French nationalists in the latter half 00:10:51.040 --> 00:10:52.960 of the eighteen hundreds. 00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:57.200 This was immediately picked up by their opponents, and their opponents used 00:10:57.200 --> 00:11:01.520 it in order to attack them, to label them as being hateful 00:11:01.520 --> 00:11:06.080 with regard to other people, so this became a polemical term almost 00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:11.840 immediately. And it is that polemical context, that polemical content of the 00:11:12.400 --> 00:11:16.880 word that then carries over into English later on. 00:11:16.880 --> 00:11:17.440 And so 00:11:18.400 --> 00:11:23.280 the earliest sense of racism that we have, the earliest use of 00:11:23.280 --> 00:11:27.440 that term in English is 1902. 00:11:27.440 --> 00:11:31.760 But the term more or less disappears after that. 00:11:31.760 --> 00:11:36.400 It doesn't become common use, a common term in English until the 00:11:36.560 --> 00:11:41.360 1930s. But it is worth noting that that usage in nineteen oh 00:11:41.360 --> 00:11:44.320 two was by a man named Richard Pratt. 00:11:44.320 --> 00:11:46.880 He was a Southern Baptist. 00:11:46.880 --> 00:11:50.720 I don't think in the the technical term of Southern Baptist we'd 00:11:50.720 --> 00:11:52.960 be using today, but he was a Baptist in the South who 00:11:54.160 --> 00:11:55.840 was making the argument 00:11:57.120 --> 00:12:01.600 that we needed to destroy racism and classism. 00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:03.520 Those were the two things he was attempting to destroy 00:12:04.960 --> 00:12:07.520 by integrating everyone as fully as possible. 00:12:07.520 --> 00:12:12.640 Basically, he was advocating for a form of communism or Marxism in 00:12:12.640 --> 00:12:18.640 essence. He wanted the destruction of distinct cultures, the destruction of distinct 00:12:18.640 --> 00:12:22.400 peoples, distinct classes, in order to make everyone equal. 00:12:22.400 --> 00:12:25.600 And one of the ways that he advocated doing this was specifically 00:12:25.600 --> 00:12:27.600 with regard to the Amerindians. 00:12:27.600 --> 00:12:31.920 If you know about US history, this is not that long after 00:12:31.920 --> 00:12:35.760 we had some wars with some of the Amerindian tribes, and so 00:12:35.760 --> 00:12:39.600 he wanted to integrate them into U.S. 00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:43.440 culture, but he wanted to do that by destroying the Indian culture. 00:12:43.440 --> 00:12:47.360 And he has some terms and some comments that would be rather 00:12:47.360 --> 00:12:49.680 inflammatory to most modern ears. 00:12:49.680 --> 00:12:52.000 But the way that he sought to do this, the way he 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:56.000 worked toward his goal, was to create government schools and to use 00:12:56.640 --> 00:13:01.280 them to indoctrinate Amerindian children. 00:13:01.280 --> 00:13:06.960 Now, it's not always a bad thing to instruct the children of 00:13:06.960 --> 00:13:10.880 heathens because of course we did that as well as Christians in 00:13:10.880 --> 00:13:11.840 some parts of the world. 00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:14.320 We taught them to be Christians, that was how we spread the 00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:18.560 gospel.
