It's uh an episode that we've discussed for a while doing 00:00:56.960 --> 00:00:59.280 separately as its own thing. 00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:01.840 It's a passage that comes up all the time in the church 00:01:01.840 --> 00:01:06.000 today. In church life, you frequently hear past Pastors and others pointing 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:10.000 to Galatians 3:28 is a very important passage for one thing or 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.800 another. The problem is that virtually every time this verse comes up 00:01:14.800 --> 00:01:17.680 today, it is for evil purposes. 00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:22.000 So today we are going to be exegeting very closely the entirety 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:23.040 of this verse. 00:01:23.040 --> 00:01:26.320 It's 26 words in most English translations. 00:01:26.320 --> 00:01:28.560 It's 23 words in Greek. 00:01:28.560 --> 00:01:29.760 They basically mean the same thing. 00:01:29.760 --> 00:01:32.240 I'll give you a transliteration in a minute of the Greek and 00:01:32.240 --> 00:01:33.120 the English. 00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:37.120 There's one error that's common in almost all the translations today that 00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:40.640 goes back to the King James that we will be discussing at 00:01:40.640 --> 00:01:41.840 some length. 00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:45.920 But it's not an error that used to matter because it didn't 00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:50.000 change what the verse meant until these new attacks occurred. 00:01:50.240 --> 00:01:53.600 We've talked a lot in past episodes about how the new modern 00:01:53.600 --> 00:01:58.800 global religion has new doctrines, it has new tenets of the new 00:01:58.800 --> 00:02:04.240 faith. That was sort of how it was sold. 00:02:37.360 --> 00:02:40.240 And that sounded pretty good to some people. 00:02:40.240 --> 00:02:42.480 So why would they attack Galatians 3.28? 00:02:42.480 --> 00:02:43.920 So we talked about that in that episode. 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:46.560 We're going to rehash a bit of that today because it's really 00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:51.040 important. And In three of the human race episodes, one on foundational 00:02:51.040 --> 00:02:56.320 matters, on scripture and soteriology, and on racism, in different contexts, we 00:02:56.320 --> 00:03:01.920 discussed how this passage is used to falsely bind consciences and things 00:03:02.320 --> 00:03:04.480 that are not found in scripture. 00:03:04.480 --> 00:03:07.760 On the episode on women, scripture and ontology, the same thing, saying 00:03:07.760 --> 00:03:10.720 that sexes don't exist because of Jesus. 00:03:10.720 --> 00:03:12.560 Somehow that makes sense. 00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:16.080 If you paid attention two weeks ago to the Gnosticism episode, will 00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:18.320 sound very much like the Gnostic heresy. 00:03:18.320 --> 00:03:20.320 Because that's exactly what's going on. 00:03:20.320 --> 00:03:23.120 I want to reiterate as we said in that episode: when we 00:03:23.120 --> 00:03:27.520 call something Gnostic, this is not the generic internet. 00:03:27.440 --> 00:03:29.920 I don't like it, so I'm gonna call it the G word. 00:03:29.920 --> 00:03:32.640 There are a lot of people online that have just latched onto 00:03:32.640 --> 00:03:34.320 that and say, well, it's Gnostic. 00:03:34.320 --> 00:03:35.440 We're not doing that. 00:03:35.440 --> 00:03:37.920 I'm conscious of the fact that it's become a meme. 00:03:37.920 --> 00:03:41.840 And it's unfortunate because there is actually a portion of the first 00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:46.240 and second century Gnostic heresy that's come roaring back today. 00:03:46.240 --> 00:03:51.520 And so when we deal with this passage today, it's in light 00:03:51.520 --> 00:03:53.360 of the things we said two weeks ago. 00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:57.680 Remember Gnosticism, one of its core tenets was denial of the flesh, 00:03:57.680 --> 00:04:01.200 saying that the flesh is it's not real or it's wicked, it's 00:04:01.200 --> 00:04:02.320 not really us. 00:04:02.320 --> 00:04:06.400 We're spiritual, that is the higher realm, and all this fleshly stuff 00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:11.120 is evil, it's wrong, it's not us, it's incidental, it's accidental. 00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:12.240 That's a heresy. 00:04:12.240 --> 00:04:13.920 That is an anti-Christian heresy. 00:04:13.920 --> 00:04:19.040 It's an anti creation heresy, which makes it an anti-creator heresy. 00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:22.160 So in the episode we dealt with the fact that these things 00:04:22.160 --> 00:04:24.400 are going on in the church today. 00:04:24.400 --> 00:04:28.640 And then in last week's episode we established the same thing that 00:04:28.640 --> 00:04:32.240 Paul is establishing as he's writing this letter to the Galatians, which 00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:34.000 is that you people are falling away. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:36.720 I've taught you the truth, and now you're believing lies. 00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:38.560 Where'd these lies come from? 00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:42.400 And so we'll explain how the fact that Paul would have these 00:04:42.400 --> 00:04:47.200 concerns, that God would have these concerns in Galatia should give us 00:04:47.200 --> 00:04:48.080 pause today. 00:04:48.080 --> 00:04:49.520 We're no better than them. 00:04:49.520 --> 00:04:51.600 Paul didn't plant our churches. 00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:55.360 Paul, through the Holy Spirit, has given us hard doctrine. 00:04:55.360 --> 00:04:59.600 He's given us the words that we hold to, but he certainly 00:04:59.600 --> 00:05:03.040 was going to do a better job planting his church than any 00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:03.920 of our churches. 00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:05.440 I think that's fair to say. 00:05:05.440 --> 00:05:08.640 Now, insofar as a human is going and doing something, that's true 00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:10.800 because he was an apostle of Christ. 00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:15.040 Insofar as God's word is taught, there's always the possibility for any 00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:19.200 church to be completely faithful to God's word insofar as it believes 00:05:19.200 --> 00:05:20.400 what scripture says. 00:05:20.400 --> 00:05:21.680 But that's the problem. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:24.480 Do you believe what God has told you, or do you believe 00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:26.640 lies you're bringing in from elsewhere? 00:05:26.640 --> 00:05:29.200 Same problem that they had in Galatia is a problem we have 00:05:29.200 --> 00:05:32.000 today. So we talked about in last week's episode that this is 00:05:32.320 --> 00:05:34.320 this is the modern fight. 00:05:34.320 --> 00:05:38.000 It's a fight against not only ancient heresies, but against the unbelief 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.720 that's inherently in all of our hearts. 00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:45.120 And last episode that we've previously referenced significantly Galatians three twenty eight 00:05:45.280 --> 00:05:49.040 was in Hebrews, Israelites, and Jews, where we talked about the Talmudic 00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:54.240 prayer and how one of their prayers is directly condemned by Galatians 00:05:54.320 --> 00:05:59.120 3.28, that what the Jews pray to this day is an inversion 00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:02.480 of what God says here and why that's significant. 00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:08.000 Just to give some historical context, Paul and Barnabas's first missionary journey 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:11.760 in about AD 47 and 48 went into Glacia. 00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:14.960 If you don't know, Glacia is an Asia Minor, it's north of 00:06:14.960 --> 00:06:18.080 Jerusalem by quite a bit, north of Judea. 00:06:18.080 --> 00:06:22.240 It's in modern day Turkey, kind of centered probably around the modern 00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:24.640 city of Ankara. 00:06:24.640 --> 00:06:28.240 The problem with us hearing that today is you think, oh, Paul 00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:31.360 went to the Turks and you know what a Turk looks like. 00:06:31.360 --> 00:06:33.760 You know they're something about their language and you know, a little 00:06:33.760 --> 00:06:35.040 bit about their culture. 00:06:35.040 --> 00:06:38.480 You know, they're Muslim now, that they're you know, brown and swarthy 00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:40.160 and like that's what they are. 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:45.280 Okay. Well, you don't know if you don't pay any attention to 00:06:45.280 --> 00:06:48.800 the historical context is that that's not what they were then. 00:06:48.800 --> 00:06:53.520 The people to whom Paul took his first missionary journey in Galatia 00:06:53.520 --> 00:06:55.040 were Celts. 00:06:55.040 --> 00:07:00.080 Celts, the same people, the are really only extant today in Ireland, 00:07:00.080 --> 00:07:02.160 and a bits and few other places. 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:05.920 But basically when you think Irish you think Celt, that's who lived 00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:11.840 here. Galatia in modern day Turkey was Celtic, it was not Arab, 00:07:11.840 --> 00:07:17.200 it was not Shemite, it was Japhethite, and incidentally the same is 00:07:17.200 --> 00:07:20.640 true of much, if not all of the Mediterranean. 00:07:20.640 --> 00:07:26.880 For example, King Tut, couple thousand years before, his DNA was Irish, 00:07:26.880 --> 00:07:28.000 it's Celtic. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.960 He had red hair and blue eyes, and he wasn't the only 00:07:30.960 --> 00:07:36.960 one. The pharaohs, in many cases, they had japathetic DNA. 00:07:36.960 --> 00:07:41.680 Now they're also, I believe, shemitic in ancestry, but there's inbreeding, this 00:07:41.680 --> 00:07:45.760 happens. So the problem is that today, when we think, oh, I 00:07:45.760 --> 00:07:49.680 know what an Egyptian looks like, I know what a Greek looks 00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:51.680 like, I know what a Turk looks like. 00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:52.640 It doesn't apply. 00:07:52.640 --> 00:07:55.360 Two thousand years ago many of those people looked different. 00:07:55.360 --> 00:07:59.520 And it's particularly true of where Paul was taking his missionary journeys. 00:07:59.520 --> 00:08:01.840 When he went to these people, they were Celts. 00:08:01.840 --> 00:08:06.720 They had light eyes, light skin, light hair, they were European. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:12.000 Now, this only matters because of the very first couplet in Galatians 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:13.280 three twenty eight. 00:08:13.280 --> 00:08:16.000 I'm gonna read the whole thing from the ESV. 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:18.880 It's similar in most of the other translations, and I'm also going 00:08:18.880 --> 00:08:22.400 to give the transliteration from Greek so you can see that they're 00:08:22.400 --> 00:08:23.600 the same thing. 00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:26.960 In English, it says, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is 00:08:26.960 --> 00:08:31.600 neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you 00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:34.160 are all one in Christ Jesus. 00:08:34.160 --> 00:08:39.600 And then the transliteration from the twenty-three words in Greek, neither there 00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:44.480 is Jew nor Greek, neither there is slave nor free, neither there 00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:50.880 is male and female, for you one are in Christ Jesus. 00:08:50.880 --> 00:08:54.960 We'll get into some of the details there because there's one word 00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:59.200 that's mistranslated from the Greek in the majority of the modern English 00:08:59.280 --> 00:09:02.880 in other translations in other languages, going back to the King James. 00:09:02.880 --> 00:09:04.640 So it's not just a modern issue. 00:09:04.640 --> 00:09:06.480 There's just a sloppiness. 00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:08.960 And the sloppiness didn't used to matter. 00:09:08.960 --> 00:09:11.840 It didn't really significantly change the text. 00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:15.520 But the modern attacks do make that change matter. 00:09:15.520 --> 00:09:17.920 So we'll talk about that in a bit. 00:09:17.920 --> 00:09:20.640 I give that text now because the first thing it says is 00:09:20.640 --> 00:09:22.240 there is neither Jew nor Greek. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:26.320 Well when Paul is speaking to the Galatians, there were almost no 00:09:26.320 --> 00:09:26.960 Jews there. 00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:29.840 They were and they weren't Greek either, they were Celts. 00:09:29.840 --> 00:09:31.360 They were speaking Greek. 00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:34.320 They were part of the empire of the West. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:36.880 It was first the Greeks and then the Romans. 00:09:36.880 --> 00:09:38.640 You know, that their empires were huge. 00:09:38.640 --> 00:09:41.680 So they were conquering and ruling these lands. 00:09:42.800 --> 00:09:49.040 When Paul says Jew nor Greek, he's drawing a distinction that matters. 00:09:49.040 --> 00:09:51.600 And today we're told it matters because of race. 00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:55.200 It meant something completely different at the time. 00:09:55.200 --> 00:10:00.480 Because when you look at the dispute in Galatians, the actual problem 00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:04.560 that Paul was trying to solve by writing this to them was 00:10:04.800 --> 00:10:09.360 Judaizers. The Judaizing heresy had emerged in the church that he had 00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:12.000 just planted within just a couple years. 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:14.000 We talked about that three weeks ago. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:18.080 There were those who came along from the so-called circumcision party who 00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:20.400 said, You guys, okay, you're Christian now, that's great. 00:10:20.400 --> 00:10:23.520 You all have to be circumcised, you have to live as Jews, 00:10:23.520 --> 00:10:26.560 you have to follow the Mosaic Law. 00:10:26.560 --> 00:10:30.480 And Paul's writing to the Galatians, because he's not only horrified, but 00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:32.960 he's pissed, he is angry. 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:37.200 And I think the fourth chapter, he actually says in effect, I 00:10:37.200 --> 00:10:39.840 don't know who it is among you that is telling you to 00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:43.040 be circumcised, but he should emasculate himself. 00:10:43.040 --> 00:10:44.880 He should castrate himself. 00:10:44.880 --> 00:10:46.320 He should chop it all off. 00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:49.600 He's saying this guy's telling you to take off your foreskin, you 00:10:49.600 --> 00:10:51.200 tell him to take off the whole thing. 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:52.160 He was angry. 00:10:52.160 --> 00:10:56.160 God was angry that these Judaizers had shown up in a church 00:10:56.160 --> 00:11:00.240 that Paul had just planted, and these were Christians, and the first 00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:02.960 words in chapter three that we're going to read in its entirety 00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:08.160 in just a minute are, O foolish Galatians, who bewitched you. 00:11:08.160 --> 00:11:11.120 I highlight this before we read the whole thing because that is 00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:13.600 a warning to us too, as the warning from last week on 00:11:14.160 --> 00:11:18.640 apostasy. We have this nonsense view in our heads that we are 00:11:18.640 --> 00:11:22.880 somehow immunized from falling into error because we say we're Christian, we 00:11:22.880 --> 00:11:26.640 say we believe the Bible, we have a confessional document, and whatever 00:11:26.640 --> 00:11:30.080 our church body is, and we definitely really hold to that. 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:34.720 And so given all those things, how could we possibly be bewitched? 00:11:34.720 --> 00:11:37.840 Well, Paul came to these people and he told them everything, and 00:11:37.840 --> 00:11:40.720 as soon as he left someone snuck in and gave them a 00:11:40.720 --> 00:11:43.920 different gospel, and they ate it up, they loved it, and they 00:11:43.920 --> 00:11:45.120 switched sides. 00:11:45.120 --> 00:11:48.320 They were abandoning the Christian faith right behind his back. 00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:51.280 So when he follows up with the church in Galatia, it's not 00:11:51.280 --> 00:11:54.000 to congratulate them on their perseverance in the faith. 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:56.960 It's to say, Oh foolish Galatians, who bewitched you? 00:11:56.960 --> 00:11:59.920 Who is it among you that has spread this Judaizing heresy? 00:11:59.920 --> 00:12:02.160 That was tearing apart their faith. 00:12:02.160 --> 00:12:05.680 It was about the faith that all of this hinges. 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:09.440 So when we look at the context of Galatians 00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:14.800 and you look at everything that's being said, the particular things that 00:12:14.800 --> 00:12:18.960 are said today about this one verse become just completely nonsensical They're 00:12:18.960 --> 00:12:22.960 simultaneously retarded and just absolutely demonicalized. 00:12:22.960 --> 00:12:26.960 There's no possibility for anyone who reads Galatians to come to the 00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:30.240 conclusions that pastors will try to get you to reach when they 00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:32.720 just give you the 26 words in English. 00:12:33.280 --> 00:12:36.000 Yesterday, just for the sake of curiosity, and so I can make 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:39.520 the point today as we're recording, I read Galatians from start to 00:12:39.520 --> 00:12:41.280 finish in one sitting. 00:12:41.280 --> 00:12:43.200 It took me eight and a half minutes. 00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:46.560 I'm a fast average reader, not a speed reader by any stretch. 00:12:46.560 --> 00:12:49.440 I would imagine that most of the people listening could comfortably do 00:12:49.440 --> 00:12:51.120 it in ten minutes or so. 00:12:51.120 --> 00:12:55.520 I highlight this to say that we're so lazy about saying, Oh, 00:12:55.520 --> 00:12:57.520 I'm just gonna read a verse or I'm gonna read part of 00:12:57.520 --> 00:12:59.920 a verse, or maybe I'll read a chapter, but man, that's a 00:12:59.920 --> 00:13:04.560 commitment. Well, it's typical the the intros to Stone Choir run about 00:13:04.560 --> 00:13:07.280 fifteen minutes before we even really get into the meat of the 00:13:07.280 --> 00:13:10.480 subject. They're completely insane, in addition to being false doctrine, in addition 00:13:48.560 --> 00:13:50.720 to being evil, they're just absurd. 00:13:50.720 --> 00:13:54.720 No natural reading of the text would arrive at the conclusions that 00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:56.640 are being shoehorned into it. 00:13:56.640 --> 00:14:00.000 So it's only the proof texting of this verse that makes it 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:03.120 possible for this deception to occur. 00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:06.080 So, by the end of this episode, what we're going to attempt 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:11.440 to do is draw a moat around the entirety of Galatians 3.28. 00:14:11.440 --> 00:14:15.360 We're going to draw a bright line around everything that is permissible 00:14:15.360 --> 00:14:17.680 for anyone to say about this verse. 00:14:17.680 --> 00:14:22.240 And we are going to extend as a challenge of defiance against 00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:26.400 any teacher who would say anything differently than we say here. 00:14:26.400 --> 00:14:29.440 We are saying to you that they are outside of the Christian 00:14:29.440 --> 00:14:32.000 faith in whatever they say that's contrary to what we say here 00:14:32.160 --> 00:14:36.000 today. 01:09:51.760 --> 01:09:55.520 And so the Jewish reader is going to say, okay, so the 01:09:55.520 --> 01:09:58.960 circumcised Jew and the uncircumcised Greek. 01:09:58.960 --> 01:10:02.880 Great.
